19.6 GW of private power registered by April 2026

Private power projects registered with Nersa are inching closer to 20 GW, according to the latest information released by Nersa on May 13,  2026. In the first four months of 2026 alone, 132 new projects with a combined capacity of 1.34 GW were registered. 

Six projects of 100 MW or more have been registered so far this year. Four are solar projects, and two are wind. Three are in the Free State, two in the Northern Cape and one in the North West. The projects are: 

  • Lengana Solar PV (250 MW), Free State
  • Mulilo Kuruman Wind Power Phase 2 (240 MW), Northern Cape
  • Volta PV (150 MW), Free State 
  • Lerato Solar Power Plant (120 MW), North West 
  • FS Stinkputs Wind (240 MW), Northern Cape 
  • Nyala Solar Power Plant (240 MW), Free State
